I taught elementary age children for more than 25 years in Christian school & homeschool settings & I have used Spell to Write and Read curriculum (SWR) for over 18 years. I accept students for online tutoring lessons in spelling, reading, & penmanship. I teach printing using pre-cursive D’Nealian style & cursive using Cursive First curriculum; both complement SWR.

For many years my heart has been focused on children who have suffered trauma during their early years. I am certified to teach Advanced Parenting (attachment.org) and have presented classes providing effective tools to parents and teachers of challenging children.

How did I come to tutor SWR? My children! Years of struggling with my children’s learning differences, years of research eventually led me to this program. It’s in the trenches of educating my children, where I’ve poured immeasurable hours self-educating to help accommodate their many needs. The list encompasses ADHD, visual & auditory processing disorders, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, & slow processing speed, which all relate to anxiety & depression.

Homeschooling allows me the most freedom to meet their needs individually. SWR has provided the foundation for spelling, reading, logical thought, & deeper word study to help further language acquisition. Sharing this hard-earned knowledge with other families provides an extra purpose to our struggles; I am passionate to help other struggling learners. I am a certified teacher with 14 years’ experience in education. I have experience in public, private, homeschool, and reading and math intervention. I tutor all elementary subjects via Zoom, but I am most passionate about SWR. I homeschool our daughter and taught her how to read and spell with SWR and she is thriving and still loving it!

My teaching philosophy is to individualize lessons to each students' needs and to make learning as fun as possible. I believe each student is unique and that education should be personal. I have a B.S. in Elementary Education & have taught students for over 20 years. Having taught all ages in multiple countries, my skills adapt quickly to each student’s needs. I have instructed public, private, adult, English as 2nd language learners, & home-schooled students. Many students excel under my tutelage. I am the Tennessee trainer for SWR, & I teach students online and in person.

Because SWR takes some time to learn, I only take students for a 6-month contract at a time. Students meet with me 2x per week for 30 minutes each session. Parents are required to be present during sessions. It takes time to unlearn what has been taught incorrectly & relearn the better way. Lighthouse for Literacy - Family Education Services

I represent Classical Start Tutoring (classicalstarttutor@gmail.com) where struggling readers become fluent readers & proficient writers. Upon graduating from college, I taught high school English, speech, & drama. After home educating my children, I returned to the high school English classroom, then moved to elementary & middle school reading intervention. I found success in using traditional or classical methods to build up strong reading, writing, & speaking skills in students of all ages. Spell to Write and Read was the foundation of my children’s early homeschool education. In the charter school where I taught, I observed so many students stop and say, “I don’t know that word,” so I tested many lower performers. I found these 9th graders read at 5th grade level or below. I requested to use SWR for reading intervention at the charter school & helped bring students who were 2 grade levels behind advance rapidly using SWR principles. I began tutoring part-time using SWR in 2016 & full-time tutoring online using Zoom in 2019.

Several of my current students began reading at kindergarten level when they came to me in 5th grade, but now read fluently & are becoming strong writers while preparing for college admissions exams.

My clients pay a base hourly rate of $55/hour, paid monthly. Most pay $440 for two 55-minute sessions per week. A free 55-minute assessment is available in reading, grammar & writing, spelling, vocabulary, & reading comprehension, whichever 2 to 3 areas of highest priority to the parent.
